Canadian Citizenship

Posted by tobi — 01:04 PM May 05

Today I got my Canadian citizenship.

Both Germany and Canada allow multiple citizenships so I’m allowed to carry both. Geographical redundancy accomplished. Next step is to apply for my Canadian passport so that I can instant failover :-)

Update: Take the citizenship test yourself and post your score in the comments.

Hey, congratulations and welcome to the world of Geographical redundancy! (super phrase, BTW!)

When I got my “Niederlassungserlaubniss” in Germany I was so happy, I stopped people on the street to tell them how great it was that after 8 years, I could finally, officially, sit down. ;-)

Measured shortly thereafater, my “freak factor” in the neighborhood showed a sharp increase.

    Congratulations!

I’d be curious what your steps were, how long each one took, and what your tips are for the process, because I’m thinking about moving to Canada long-term as well.

If you don’t want to post it here, perhaps you could email me.

    Thanks, and congrats again.

I believe Finland also has duel-citizenship. Though you may have to serve in their all defensive military as well… ;)

Well done and welcome from Montreal! We will have fun passing your link onto our resident German exchange student and our son now residing in Hermansburg.

    Again, kudos & welcome!

Glückwünsche! I have at least another six months to go with a single point of failure (and what spectacular a failure it is!)

  • tobi 06 May 19:19

Thank you for all the kind words :-)

Ben: I’m living in Canada for 5 years now. After arriving I had a 6 months point of entry visa and used this time to get a extension for 2 years. At the same time I filed for common law with my canadian girlfriend ( now wife ) and permanent residency. Those arrived about 1 1/2 years after I came over the pond.

Once you live in Canada for 4 years you can apply for citizenship. It’s a bit of a process and you have to take the exam I linked above.

    TObias,

Congratulations on Canadian citizenship! I’ve been to Canada multiple times – good economic opportunity and great people.

I just sent you an email to your regular account. Would love to get our zero cost payment system on your site.

    Cheers

Thanks for the information, Tobi. Looks like there’s a reasonable path to permanent residence / citizenship (unlike in the US).

    Yay, Canada!
