Typo Visual Identity

typo logo

Its no secret that typo is starting to become one of the prestige rails applications. Who would have thought two months ago when I setup trac after people literally harassed me into doing so.

Its a great example that good software comes out of projects which started out of the developers needs. Rails and Basecamp themselves are great examples of this and so Is the software I created for my own ecommerce store snowdevil ( Look forward for some announcements regarding its codebase in the coming months ).

Today another piece of the puzzle fell into place for the typo project. I’m pleased to announce that Justin Palmer joined the typo team. Justin will work on all aspects of frontend but will mainly coin the visual identity of typo. And he did so with a bang by singlehandedly creating this gorgeous new logo for the project.

Read his announcement here. Make sure to subscribe to his RSS as he will be documenting the process of creating the design.

Welcome on board Justin!

I don’t have typo installed yet, but am a Nuby and Rails-dev-in-trailing so have been following this blog closely.

I don’t have a use for a blog but have setup so many WordPresses for friends and clients that knowing how the software works intricately is a major boon, and I’m looking forward to getting to know typo really well soon.

However…damn, you’re doing so well with it and making so many great changes that I’m tempted to start my own blog just to play with it! Keep up the great work.

Thanks tobi! Can’t wait to see the things to come for typo.

How do this things get to happen? Did you contact Justin or was it the other way around?

I plan to launch a rails website soon, but my design skills are subpar so, where do I get a visual identity from?

chris: Thanks for the kind words!

victor: Justin basically sent me a email out of the blue telling me that he would like to join the project.

Good code attracts good minds and so fourth.

At least thats what I’d like to think….

Victor, There are a numerous designers wanting to join open source projects, its just a matter of getting connected with those people. Your best bet would be to visit design communities and promote the fact you are looking for someone with design experience.

Some will be exuberant, but some will be reluctant if it isn’t something there interested in and they don’t view it has having potential. You’ll find that now days most designers are multi talented. Usually if they are a good designer, they are also good at other things such as css and xhtml.

I wanted to join the typo team because it has great potential, it’s not a stagnate project, it will also give me, as a Php developer too, a chance to learn more about rails.

    Tobias, just an advice

Never, ever, ever crop a visual with a logo this way. Give the baby some space on the top.

Hey, cut me some slack. I’m a programmer.

Just started in Rails, and I must say I have seen quite a bit about this thing on the mailing list. Congrats on what seems to be a successful piece of software.
